Dr. Özlem Yalçın received her PhD from the Department of Physiology, Akdeniz University. She worked as a post-doctoral fellowship at University of California San Diego with Prof. Paul Johnson, Prof. Pedro Cabrales and she is currently an Assistant Professor in the Koç University School of Medicine, Department of Physiology. Her research interests include blood banking, microcirculation, coagulation disorders, microfluidics and medical applications, hemorheology, hemodynamics and blood-related proteomics. Ongoing projects in her laboratory are: 1. The role of shear forces and effective factors in the regulation of red blood cell deformability. 2. Development of a portable thromboelastometry device for evaluating the coagulation pathway. 3. Dynamics of adenosine triphosphate release in erythrocytes. 4. Regulation of blood flow in the microcirculation. 5. Development of portable automatic blood group system with disposable cartridges. 6. Detection of diagnostic and prognostic markers in patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). 7. Evaluation by rotational thromboelastography of the hypercoagulable state among allogeneic stem cell donors undergoing apheresis before transplantation. 8. Comparing the effects of oral mucosa-derived heterotopic fibroblasts and dermal fibroblasts on cutaneous wound healing. 9. The effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the blood fluidity in patients with various disorders.
