Dr. Özge Karanfil is an assistant professor at Koç University jointly at the College of Administrative Sciences and Economics and its School of Medicine. She received her BSc and MSc degrees in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University, an MSc degree in Physiology from McGill University, and completed her Ph.D. at MIT Sloan School of Management in 2016, with a concentration in health system dynamics. She continued her studies as a Yerby Fellow at Harvard School of Public Health, Department of Global Health and Population between 2016-18 before joining Koc University.

Dr Karanfil aims to produce policy-relevant research by integrating management, systems, and health sciences with a strong emphasis on data-driven analysis and modeling. Her research areas include system dynamics simulations, dynamic modeling for health policy analysis, physiologically inspired disease modeling, human decision making and evidence-based medicine. She received the Lupina Young Researchers Award for Healthcare Applications by the System Dynamics Society in 2017, the Koç -Harvard Visiting Scholar Fellowship by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in 2019, and the TÜBİTAK 2232 International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers with her Project entitled: “Changing Trends in Healthcare Management: Use of Simulation Models to Inform Health Policy and Evidence-Based Decisions”, in 2020.

With a background in management, industrial engineering and health sciences, she is drawn to systemic problems of chronic and repetitive nature, which encompass typical constraints and approaches with important managerial implications for the societal domain, coming from medical or non-medical contexts.  Dr. Karanfil is the founder and director of the Health Systems Modeling Lab at Koç University since 2018.
